I don't know if you are planning to take questions from readers but, just in case - I have lots of carved oak furniture that I would like to white wash. I"m not sure if it's called glazing, or what, but paint it so the brown still shows and gives depth to the carvings. My family thinks this is sacriligious because they are old famil pieces but I have darker walls and I think they'd look better brightened up. Good or bad idea? Thanks.

Hi Lost,
I can see your dilemma. You have a couple of options here. If you were my client, I would advise lightening up the walls so the furniture is the darker of the two. It's a more classic and long-lasting look.
If you decide to go forward with a glazed finish, I would advise you to find a professional refinisher to do them. Getting a consistent look is not as easy as you might think.
You have to assess the sentimental value yourself but in general I support modifying an antique if it means you will get more use out of it.
Good luck!

Thanks, Lorrie. I've been second guessing my wall colors since posting my question. Will take your suggestion to "Lighten up" under advisement. Looking forward to reading more from you.

Thanks Lost,
Sometimes it just takes a different point of view. It's fun to change your surroundings and for the most part easy. Just move furniture from room to room or change out the light fixture. It does not have to bee all that extreme:-)
Let me know if there are any topics you would like to see me cover in future posts.
Have a great weekend!
