Obits that are fun to read...sort of

Every morning, I scan the obituaries in my morning newspaper, hoping I won't recognize any names. Not a fun ritual, for sure, but that's what people my age do, right? Well, here's a Web site that puts a quirky spin on the traditional obit page, and it just might provide proper closure for people experiencing the death of a relationship.

RelationshipObit.com is a place for people (and most of them appear to be women) to bury their dead love affairs - figuratively and electronically speaking, of course. The entries are alternately funny, sad, biting and blistering, and one can only hope the authors feel better for having put their exes to rest in this cyber cemetery.

A sample:

"He will be remembered for his lack of sincerity, his deceitfulness, his drama, his ill adjusted and myopic point of view on life, his cowardice, his inability to ever be truly open and candid, his big act to cover up who he really is, his insecurity and hatefulness, especially how much he hated himself. The sadness behind his fake smile. The needy suffocating behavior he called love. "

This NPR audio clip with RelationshipObit's founder, Kathleen Horan, explains how the idea was hatched. A book by the same name, based on entries from the site, is expected in 2009.
