A sneak peek into "Guyland"

My mind would appear to be on the opposite sex today, but I wanted to share two interviews with the author of "Guyland: The perilous world where boys become men." As a mother of a 26-year-old "guy," I found his revelations fascinating... and more than a little frightening.

In this Q & A from Today.com, author Michael Kimmel paints a somewhat disturbing yet realistic picture of why young men have such difficulty growing up these days. Blaming women's changing roles in society, fear of the "marriage trap," and pornography as "revenge and reassurance," Kimmel says it's no wonder we've got a lot of Peter Pans on our hands.

Kimmel joins Kathleen Parker, author of "Save the Males," on the Today show to flesh it out with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb (a pair of chattier interviewers, I never hope to see).

I dont think much has changed since we were in our 20s really, except that the media seems to encourage the "30 is the new 21" message so our sons don't think they need to "grow up" until then.

Part of this is due to "parachute parents" that want to overprotect their children and retain some contol over them. It's a difficult thing but there comes a time when parents need to step back and allow their sons, as well as daughters, make their own decisions, good or bad.
