The Associated Press has come out with a great viewer's guide that will bring you up to speed on who to watch and what to look for in each event. It's a dry-ish document (no pictures) but helpful for those of us who have been exposed only to Michael Phelps, Dara Torres (my hero) and that cute little blond gymnast on whom everyone is pinning their hopes.
For instance, who knew that the Lopez family - Steven, Mark and Diana - could dominate Taekwondo this year? According the AP's viewer's guide: "The trio made sports history in 2005, when they each won world championship titles in their divisions, the first time that has ever happened in the same sport in the same year." Pretty cool! (I knew I should have kept the kids in Taekwondo lessons.)
